Humacao's airport is no longer used for daily flights to Vieques santorini and Culebra as it was in the past. It is now used for charter flights and for skydiving. The skydiving facilities located in Humacao are of the most actively used on the island.
It offers one asphalt runway (16/34) equipped with night chania landing lights.[1] The two other runway surfaces (04/22 & 10/28) are in rough condition. There are several hangers at the airport and room for more development. It is host to many activities year-round, including a glider club, the Innisfail Flying Club and a skydiving training facility.
The early scene involving Bond and Jaws in which Bond is pushed out of the aircraft without a parachute took weeks of planning and preparation. The skydiving sequence was coordinated by Don Calvedt under the supervision of second unit director John Glen.[2] Stuntman Jake Lombard was hired to double for Bond, who would later pose as Moore's double in films such as Octopussy and for Necros in The rodi Living Daylights. B. J. Worth, who played the stunt double of Jaws, would also later become a consistent member of the stunt team for aerial sequences throughout the 1980s, into Timothy Dalton's films such as The Living centrebet casino review Daylights. Members of the U.S. championship skydiving team aided the stunt team with the planning and the team's master rigger designed a one-inch thick parachute pack that could be concealed beneath the suit to give the impression of the missing parachute. When the stunt men opened their parachutes at the end of every shoot, custom-sewn velcro costume seams would separate to allow the hidden parachutes to open. The skydiver cinematographer used a lightweight zante Panavision camera, bought from an old pawn shop in Paris, which he had adapted, and attached to his helmet to shoot the entire sequence. The scene took a total of 88 skydives by the stuntmen to complete it.
To become a high performance canopy pilot, an interested and competent skydiver will typically have at least 1000 jumps to their credit, and start a 1-2 year training process to become skilled and experienced enough to compete at the 'standard' level. Professional levels take 2-4 years of dedicated training, where some competitors have 10,000+ jumps.
Ground launching and Speed-flying are another form of canopy cefalonia piloting. These disciplines differ from swooping in that the canopy pilot flies his canopy in close proximity to the ground, either descending a mountainside or other gradient or, in certain conditions, hovering metres above the ground much like a paraglider pilot. These types of flight are appealing to those pilots wanting long canopy flights at relatively low cost or for those wanting to use their skydiving gear in a new and challenging way.
